We place priority on safety, not arrests -FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) says it does not derive fulfillment in arresting motorists but in creating road safety awareness among the people and save lives.

Assistant Corps Commander Joyce Alexander, unit commander of the commission in Lugbe, FCT, said this on Saturday during the House-House Enlightenment Campaign on safety on the roads for motorists.

According to Alexander, the campaign with the theme: ‘Bringing Road Safety Awareness to Your Doorstep,’ is a way of educating motorists to be conscious about road safety.

Alexander said every Nigerian life was important and there was the need for people to maintain safety on roads.

She noted that all FRSC officials were human beings that also had the need to socialise with people and make friends to function well in the society.

She said: “What we are used to usually is like a road show and we go out on the road, motor parks, churches and mosques, to talk to people.

“This time around, what we are trying to do is to get into their homes to reach them with the message of road safety.

“We want to let people know that FRSC is not all about arresting offenders. If you look at the handbills, one of them says don’t patronise touts, there is a drivers licence outfit now in Lugbe.

“Why are we doing this? We are not happy when we arrest people on the road. We want to make sure that everybody does what is right so it is not just about arresting every day.

“Nobody wants to be an enemy to anybody; we also want to be friends with everybody because we are also human beings.

“If we remove the uniform, you and I are exactly the same, so if I can reach you, talk to you, tell you what to do then I don’t have to arrest you, then we remain friends because you are doing the right thing.”

Alexander said the house-to-house campaign was the third edition since the awareness began and would be carried out once every month alongside rallies and road shows. (NAN)
