The Deputy Head of Mission at the Japan Embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Masaya Otsuka said the Government of Japan was committed to safeguarding Cultural Heritage in Nigeria.
He said this on Tuesday in Abuja at the validation meeting on the assessment of policies and legal framework for safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Nigeria organised by UNESCO.
Otsuka said that the government of Japan had so far contributed 16 million dollars in funding programmes and activities on cultural heritage by UNESCO and the Nigerian government.
The envoy said that cultural heritage was special in the existence of people.
“It symbolise the culture of the people, it is the background that can provide automatic sense of unity in understanding the history of where we come from.
“For over 40 years, we have been contributing to the protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage like heritage sites around the world.
“There is need to preserve cultural heritage as most of these heritage sites are deteriorating and others disappearing.” (NAN)
