He is called The Special One by millions of admirers around the world. But, this night at Westfalenstadion, Germany, Real Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho and his lads were made to look very ordinary by hosts Borussia Dortmund in the European Champions League semi-final first leg.
If not for the 43 minute goal by former world’s best footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, the result would have been a duplication of yesterday’s 4-0 drubbing of another Spanish side Barcelona by yet another German team, Bayern Munich in the first semi-final pairings.
Dortmund made their intentions known quite early in the game with Robert Lewandowski opening scores in the eight minute. After winning the ball in the middle of the field, Gundogan found Gotze, who beat Ramos with ease on the left touchline and crossed to Lewandowski, who stretched to jab the ball into the net.
Ronaldo’s equaliser after being fed by Higuain, who had intercepted a pass, restored hope for Real as they went for the halftime break.
But it was a false hope. Five minutes on the restart Lewandowski struck for a second time though from what appeared to be am offside position. He was to complete a hat trick in the next five minutes after stoking home after latching on Schmelzer’s deflected pass.
The big Pole finished the job with his fourth goal of the night in the 67th minute from the penalty spot.
The 4-1 drubbing means that Real need a miracle in the return leg to advance to the final – just like country mates Barcelona.
