Four dead bodies of women were on Tuesday discovered in a room along Olisa Onyeka Crescent, Commissioners’ Quarters in Ifite, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State by the State Police Command.

The four women were said to have died on Saturday night without the knowledge of the neighbours or any visible sign of injury.

Among the deceased was the staff of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) who was said to be the main tenant of the room, Mrs. Chinwe Obi. She was also the Electoral Officer of Onitsha.

Responding to questions from journalists the Landlady of the building, Ify Onyebumuo said that she was contacted on the phone by one of the tenants who complained that they have not seen the deceased since Saturday and that there was foul smell oozing out of her room.

“The tenant said that awful water was dropping out from the deceased’s room and she has not picked her calls since Sunday. The deceased has been a tenant in the building for 11months.”

On his part, the Caretaker of the building, Mr. Machie said that he was contacted on his cell phone by some tenants who told him of their suspicions that people may have died in the room.

News Expressgathered from another tenant that the deceased’s husband who was based in Cotonou but came home on a visit passed on in the same room on the Friday preceeding the Saturday that the wife and three others died and has since been deposited in the mortuary.

When contacted, the State Commissioner of Police, Hassan Karma said that some of the tenants reported to the police that they perceived awful odour coming out from the room and that the occupant of the room could not be reached.

He confirmed that the husband who came on a visit died in the same room on Friday preceding the day the four died.

Karma noted that the other three deceased women whose identities are yet to be ascertained were members of her church who came to sympathise with her over the sudden demise of her husband.

Giving insight to their discovery when the police visited the house the Commissioner of Police disclosed that a remnant of a pot of soup suspected to be carbon monoxide infested or poisoned as well as a generator set was discovered in the room.

He noted that the soup as well as their bodies had been taken to the mortuary for examination.

Karma assured that the police would continue in their efforts to ensure the safety of lives of properties in the state even as investigations continue on the possible cause of death of the four.
