The UN Population Fund (UNPFA), on Friday said it will provide more humanitarian assistance to improve the lives of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Yobe.

The Head of UNPFA Sub-regional Office, Kaduna, Ms. Dawn Minott made the promise during a visit to the Pompomari IDP camp in Damaturu.

She said the fund would explore more avenues of partnering with the Yobe Government, to promote reproductive health, restore women dignity and provide psycho-social support to the IDPs.

Minott expressed satisfaction that the capacity building provided to doctors and nurses by the fund had improved service delivery in the clinic at the IDP camp and other health institutions in the state.

“I am pleased to say we have received positive feedback from all stakeholders on the relevance of the support provided by UNPFA.

“The reproductive health kits have gone directly to the beneficiaries at the IDP camp and state specialists’ hospital.

“We have seen for ourselves that those kits have been relevant in this particular context.”

Minott said UNPFA would establish an office in Yobe for effective collaboration with stakeholders and coordination of its intervention activities in the state.

Secretary to Yobe State Government, Alhaji Baba Malam-Wali commended UNPFA for providing medical services which had improved the lives of people displaced by insurgency.

“Yobe government appreciates your intervention in the provision of equipment, drugs and training services for our health personnel to improve the quality of healthcare delivery especially for the IDPs.”

Assistant Director, Public Health, Yobe Ministry for Health, Mr. Ali Abdullahi said the provision of equipment, drugs and training of health workers by UNPFA had improved health services at the camp.

He solicited for more support to meet the daily medical challenges confronting displaced persons in the state.

Similarly, the Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Musa Idi explained that IDPs in the state were categorised into three groups.

He said some IDPs were taking refuge in the government established camps, while others were in self-set groups and some preferred to stay with relations.

Idi welcomed the establishment of an office by UNPFA in the state, saying that it would enhance synergy and coordination in interventions provided to improve the lives of the displaced persons. (NAN)
