A Bauchi based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Iqra Foundation for Women and Youth Development (IFWYD), has registered a co-operative society for female fish farmers in Bauchi, with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAS).

The founder of the NGO, Hajiya Amina Garuba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Thursday that the registration would henceforth, ease the disposal of the women's end products and enhance their business gains in the state.

According to her, the cooperative will serve as an umbrella for the women to meet and take common decisions on their products.

Garuba said that the NGO had already embarked on a pilot fishing activity, adding that some women would be trained on backyard fish farming.

“The cooperative society was named Bauchi Town Foundation for Women and Youth Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, which is expected to make the disposal of their end products easier.

“Iqra will train more women on backyard fish farming, and also buy the fish at harvest, get them dried, smoked and re-sold

“With this arrangement, the women will no longer have problem marketing their product; Iqra will buy it in whole and pay them their money.”

Garuba said that plans were underway to empower women with capital to boost and sustain their fish farming activities (NAN)
