Akwa United Football Club of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, will henceforth play its premier league matches at the new Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, following an approval granted to it by the state Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The gesture was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Otuekong Nse Edem, in Uyo.
He said that the approval was as a result of recent clamp down on the club by the League Management Company, from using the Uyo Township Stadium for its premier league competitions.
News Express reports that with this development, Akwa United football team will on Sunday play its first match at the new International Stadium against the Warri Wolves of Delta State, after suffering a one goal deficit in its last match from the hands of Abia Wariors, in its away encounter.
Akwa United FC at the moment occupies the 14th position on the league table, while the Sunshine Stars of Akure lead the chart.
Sports analysts in Akwa Ibom, who spoke to journalists in Uyo, have expressed their gratitude to the state government for approving “the international nest of champions” stadium for the Akwa United FC, expressing their hope that the team would “now live up to the hope and expectations of government and the teeming football supporters” in the state.
