“Honestly, Madrid really impressed me this evening. They dealt with Barca in a way they (Barca) will not forget in a very long time to come.”
That was Adesoye Adebiyi, a Nigerian fan of Real Madrid, speaking his mind on last night’s El Classico in Spain in which Jose Mourinho’s boys demolished dreaded Barcelona in their Nou Camp fortress in the return leg of the 2013 Copa del Rey.
The first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu had ended one goal apiece, raising hopes that Barca, who are on course to dethroning Real Madrid in the La Liga, would equally take home the Copa del Rey. But that was not to be as the visitors were in a killer mood. Barca’s talismanic Lionel Messi was not only neutralised, but his opposite number, Cristian Ronaldo, was simply unstoppable, scoring a brace to eliminate their bitter rivals from the competition.
Ronaldo struck on his sixth straight visit to Nou Camp when he earned and converted a penalty in the 13th minute. He found the net again after the break in the 57th minute, smashing home from close range, before Raphael Varane sealed Barca’s fate, heading home a corner kick in the 68th minute.
Jordi Alba’s late goal was largely meaningless as Madrid effectively ended Barca’s 22-match unbeaten run, storming into the final with a 4-2 on aggregate.
