The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the re-scheduled State Constituency election in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Otobong Jonathan, has triumphed with a wide vote margin.
Announcing the result at local office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at Ikot Akpa Nkuk, headquarters of Ukanafun Local Government Area, the Returning Officer, Dr. Charity Ido, stated that Otobong Jonathan, scored a total of 44,690 votes to defeat four other contestants in the election held last Saturday.
The results, as announced by Dr. Ido, showed that the candidates of the Labour Party (LP) came second with 307 votes, the All Progressives Congress (APC) placed third with 173 votes, the Accord Party, came forth with 48 votes, while the APN candidate trailed behind with just 2 votes cast.
The election was described as “very orderly, peaceful, fair and credible” by political stakeholders and observers. It was witnessed by all the party agents, party supporters and stakeholders in the area, including the out-going representative of Ukanafun State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Aniekan Akpan; and the state commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, Mr. Eno Akpan.
Others were the national officer of the PDP in the area, Mr. Udo Ekpenyong; the chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area, Apostle Sylvester Udokang, and a former member of the House of Assembly, Obong Saturday Michael Akpan, among other notable politicians of the area.
News Express reports that the Ukanafun State Constituency election could not hold on the originally scheduled date of April 11, 2015, following the brutal murder of the APC candidate for the election, late Hon. Okon Uwah, a former deputy speaker in the House of Assembly.
