Amazon of Nigerian politics, Senator Aisha Alhassan, this morning failed in her bid to become the first elected female State Governor in the country after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Mr. Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of yesterday’s supplementary governorship election in Taraba State.
Announcing the result on Sunday in Jalingo, the Returning Officer, Prof Kyari Mohammed, said Ishaku scored 369,318 votes to emerge victorious while Sen. Aisha Alhassan of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came second with 275,984 votes and Chief David Kente of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) polled 29, 966 votes to finish third .
The returning officer said the there were 1,461,645 total registered voters in the state, of which 787,516 were accredited for the election. He put the total valid votes cast at 681,166, and the rejected votes at 174,131.
While the PDP agent, Mr. Rebo Usman, described it as “a well deserved victory,” his APC counterpart, Alhaji Gambo Umar, rejected the result, disclosing that the party would challenge it in court.
