Voters’ apathy mars Kaduna guber polls

As against high turnout of voters witnessed during March 28 Presidential elections in the country, it was a serious low turnout during yesterday’s Governorship and State House of Assembly election in Kaduna.

Despite early arrival of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and materials, most polling units witnessed few voters thereby making the officials to enjoy holiday of sorts for the greater part of the exercise duration..

In areas like Gonin Gora, Barnawa and Narayi in Southern metropolis of the state, electorate were seen relaxed and not bothered to go out for the accreditation.

However, Kaduna North and places like Sabon Gari, Tudun Wada witnessed massive turn out of voters.

Vice President Namadi Sambo, who arrived his polling 011 unit at Police gate, along swimming pool road, Kabala Costain area of the state at about 11am, described the process as generally peaceful.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Kaduna, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, expressed optimism, saying his party had been acceptable by the electorate thereby hoping of coming victoriousl.

Addressing newsmen shortly after he was accredited at his polling unit, 024 Angwan-Sarki, Kaduna, at about 10am, El-Rufai blamed low turnout on presumed threat from opposition party in the state.

He commended the INEC on early arrival of the election materials and staff, saying: “Accreditation commenced on time compare to that of the presidential elections.”

According to him, “People are bothered about the miscreants PDP promised to unleash on them. But the police has been able to forestall any violence.”
