Africa’s football kings, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, have made a heroic return home, two days after they overcame all odds to win the 29th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted by South Africa.
The all-conquering Nigerian team, accompanied by a Federal Government delegation led by Senate President David just landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in the Nigerian capital city, Abuja.
The Eagles were received by an ecstatic crowd that had patiently waited for several hours for their arrival. The crowd broke into wild celebrations on sighting the golden trophy won by Coach Stephen Keshi and his boys after beating hard-fighting Burkina Faso by a lone goal in Sunday night’s final match at the National Stadium in Johannesburg.
Some of the fans brandished placards praising the team for their exploits and singing the praises of Keshi, whom they begged not to resign as he earlier threatened to do.
As earlier reported by News Express, the team started the celebration right inside the Arik Air aircraft that conveyed them home. The celebration continues tonight at the Presidential Villa, where the team will be hosted by President Goodluck Jonathan.
