A group of youths, under the aegis of Bauchi Concerned Youths (BCY), on Friday called on the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to investiagate the Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) over what it called a campaign of calumny aired by the two stations.
The group, therefore, embarked on a peaceful demonstration in Bauchi, the Bauchi State capital to press home their demand.
Carrying various placards with inscriptions, including: "You can't get vote by blackmailing"; "Stop fake documentary advert"; "To blackmail means you are losing", among others, the youths visited some media houses in Bauchi metropolis, including AIT, NTA and the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The leader of the group, Comrade Bilyaminu Jambil, said BCY was a group of patriotic citizens of Nigeria desirous to protect the nation's nascent democracy and contribute their own quotas to ensuring transformation of the country.
According to him, “We are not happy with the spate of blackmails sponsored by some politicians and candidates in the forthcoming elections and being aired in the media. NBC should play its role of regulating media content.”
He said further, "We have to show our grievance over the situation because Nigeria is the only country we call home and we can't turn out to watch things happenings that way."
Jambil, thus, called on the NBC to enforce the laws after its investigation to serve as a precedence for future elections.
