CLO gives condition for deployment of soldiers during 2015 polls

Nigeria’s foremost human rights group, the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), has given a condition for the deployment of soldiers during the 2015 general elections.

Weighing in on the controversy, CLO said in a statement on the state of the nation signed by its National President, Wisdom Durueke Esq: “While we acknowledge the need for adequate security during the elections given the peculiarities of our politicians and the tense atmosphere, in the event of deployment of the military, we state that their deployment should not be for electoral duties, which is statutorily reserved for the police. Also, the deployments should be done with care.”

Durueke said that CLO’s position “is in the light of recent revelations making the rounds though it has not been proven concerning the activities of the military in determining the outcome of the Ekiti State gubernatorial election held in 2014.”

News Express will in the next few hours publish the full and detailed statement, which touched on several issues such as the state of the country’s democracy, the economy, terrorism and insecurity, 2015 general elections, as well as the civil society organisations and labour.
