Postponement of 2015 elections in the best interest of Nigerians, says TUC

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Sunday in Abuja said that the postponement of the general elections by INEC to the next six weeks was in the best interest of Nigerians and the country as a whole.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahuri Jega, on Saturday announced the postponement of the National Assembly and Presidential elections from Feb. 14 to March 28, while that of Governorship and House of Assemblies to April 11.

This, according to Jega, was after series of meetings with political parties, civil society groups and other relevant stakeholders.

Jega said all that security agencies’ report showed that security for the elections has not be perfected and would take some time.

TUC President, Bobboi Kaigama, told NAN that the entire scenario from INEC was the right step in the right direction.

“We will advise strongly that the security forces stand on their commitment to support the new dates. But after six weeks, another unexpected problem should not come up; if that happens, then their credibility will be put to question,” he said.

Kaigama called on INEC to seize the opportunity of the postponement to ensure that the 34 per cent of Nigerians who had not collected their PVCs were able to do so.

He also called on Nigerians to exercise patience with INEC and support peaceful and credible elections.

He affirmed that TUC as a group would support INEC and would give necessary collaboration if need be. (NAN)
