The Delta State Government says it would continue to ensure that the security and overall well-being of the citizens of the state is not compromised.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Chiedu Ebie, made this known on Monday while presenting cheques to the next of kin of victims of the Uwheru Fulani herdsmen attack at the palace of the Ovie of Uwheru.
Mr Ebie said the State Government is desirous in improving the security in the state hence it recently partnered with the Nigeria Police Force to host the South South Regional Security Summit in order to tackle the security challenges being experienced by the states in the region.
He said the governors in the South South Region took a decision to strengthen the BRACED Commission which has been mandated to set up a regional security outfit which, he said, would bring peace and security to the region.
Mr Ebie said the State Government commiserated with the people of Uwheru for the lives that were lost during the herdsmen attack while stating that the government would support them to overcome the grief they went through.
He also assured that the State Government would support the children of the victims by setting up an education endowment fund with N10 million which would cater for their educational needs while calling on Deltans to support the endowment fund.
The SSG disclosed that the Okowa administration has equally provided financial relief to each of the next of kin of the deceased and one of the persons that survived the attack.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, who spoke on behalf of the community, thanked the State Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, for identifying with the community in their time of grief. He said that they were overwhelmed by the State Government’s gesture towards supporting victims of the attack.
Prof. Muoboghare promised that the community will ensure that the seed fund provided by the government for the education endowment fund is judiciously utilised for the purpose for which it was set up.
Speaking on behalf of the monarch, Agbaovwe Afugbeya Oyise 11 of Uwheru kingdom, Chief Jabin Oyibokore expressed gratitude to Governor Okowa for the good gesture towards the community even as he urged the State Government to make sure that its plan towards security in the state is executed.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of cheques to the next of kin to the victims of the attack by the SSG.
