Hundreds of intending travelers through the Muritala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos are currently stranded as some airlines have cancelled their flights abruptly.
Mostly hit by the development is Turkish Airline scheduled to to take off later tonight.
News Express investigation reveals that the cause of the cancellation was due to a technical hitch at one of the two runways at the tarmac.
"We have decided to cancel all night flights scheduled for today because the runway is not properly lighted up for landing or take off. No airline wants to risk the lives of its passengers," a manager with one of the affected airlines who spoke on anonymity told News Express.
Asked when the problem will be sorted out, the official said, "It's only the management of the airport that can say that. But we have asked our passengers to leave behind their phone lines so we can contact them when the tarmac is lighted up. Definitely not this night."
Many passengers were bitter with the sudden development. Some said they had no place in town to put up for the night pending when the problem will be sorted out
"I never envisaged this kind of problem. My intention was to come to the airport, board my flight and get to my destination. I have no extra cash for lodging anywhere, I am completely stranded," narrated one of the passengers.
