The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the “exhibition of impunity, shame and lawlessness” by men of the Enugu State Police Command who on Thursday, January 30, 2020, invaded the offices of Women Aid Collective (WACOL), brutalising two lawyers over a rape case involving the son of a prominent citizen, being handled by the NGO.

NBA in a statement on Saturday signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Kunle Edun, demanded the arrest and ringing to book, of the culprits.

It said: “Information available to the Nigerian Bar Association has confirmed that the officers of the Area Command, Enugu in Enugu State that are supposed to be protecting citizens, again, took laws into their hands when they invaded, attacked and molested staff of WACOL (Women Aid Collective) at the NGO’s office in Enugu. WACOL, as a responsible corporate citizen and in line with its mandate, had duly reported the rape of a lady and furnished the full names of the suspects to the officers of the Area Command. The Police in an exhibition of impunity, shame and lawlessness, turned against the victim and officials of WACOL.

“We hereby call upon the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission to investigate this rogue behavior by the Police and bring all those involved to book.”

News Express had this afternoon reported how the lawless policemen invaded WACOL’s offices and beat a human rights lawyer, Ibangah Goodness Esq., unconscious while also brutalising one of her colleagues who intervened in a vain bid to rescue her.

When News Express contacted Enugu Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ekea, this afternoon, he confirmed the incident, saying that they would soon issue a statement on the issue.

However, the statement was yet to be issued as at the time of this report on Saturday night.
