Heads to roll over Police College rot?

Heads may roll over the deep rot at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, which was last week exposed by a television documentary.

Indications to this effect came yesterday when President Goodluck Jonathan set up a committee to probe what happened to funds released by government and donated by various organisations from 2009 to 2012 for the renovation and upgrading of police training institutions. Jonathan had visited 73-year-old Police College last Friday – a day after a Channels TV documentary exposed the shocking state of the country’s premier police training institution.

The implication is that funds realised for the rehabilitation of the school and the six others across the country was not used for that purpose.

A Presidency statement said the 11-member committee has until January 29 to submit its report. The will be chaired by the Director, Special Duties, with a representative of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as vice-chairman. Other members are the Director, Finance and Accounts; Director, PID; Director, PSD; three representatives of NPF, legal adviser, Head of Budget Division, Head of Internal Audit, Head of External Audit and Secretary PRS.

The committee’s terms of reference include ascertaining the amount of funds appropriated by the Federal Government to the police for the renovation/upgrade of its training institutions between 2009 and 2012 and total donations received during the period. It will also examine the budget proposed/appropriated to the NPF for the institutions between 2009 and 2012 as well as verify the utilisation of the funds.
