Scene of the inferno
A tanker laden with premium motor spirit (PMS) has exploded inside a mechanic village in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
An eye witness who spoke to our Correspondent said the explosion happened at about 2.45p.m. on the Amawbia by-pass by Enugu–Onitsha Expressway.
Though no life was lost in the explosion, it was gathered that many of the mechanic workshop was destroyed.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Haruna Mohammed said: “A tanker has just exploded inside a mechanic workshop at Amawbia bypass, Enugu – Onitsha Expressway Awka.
“The fire is still ragging. It is highly advisable you alert residents in the area to steer clear from the premises in order to prevent any disaster.
“The Commissioner of Police, John Abang, has visited the scene and police patrol teams have cordoned-off the area.”
He said that men of the Fire Service department have been contacted to handle the situation.
