Abia State Consumer Protection Committee has arrested 10 traders for allegedly selling adulterated products and incomplete bags of rice to unsuspecting members of the public.
The traders were nabbed when the committee raided the Umuahia Main Market. Some of the alleged adulterated products confiscated during the raid included bags of rice, Custard powder, Dry Gin and other alcoholic beverages and fruit drinks without NAFDAC registration numbers, production and expiry dates.
State chairman of the committee, Dr. Steve Amanze, said with the raid, the committee has flagged off its war against the sale of fake, adulterated and counterfeit products in Umuahia.
Amanze said his committee raided Umuahia Market followingcomplaints of shortchanging of consumers.
He advised consumers and dealers to check and ensure that products they want to buy have these requirements before purchasing them to avoid buying unwholesome goods.
Amanze said those arrested would be handed over to the police for further interrogation and possibleprosecution.
He said the committee will sustain the campaign in Umuahia and Aba and requestedthe public to furnish it with information to enable it to perform optimally.
Some of the dealers claimed they were ignorant of the fact that NAFDAC numbers were not on the products while others said the products were imported.
