Naira Marley
From an overview, 2019 has been a super productive year in the Nigerian music scene, in the sense that so many superb songs were released, new talents were discovered and Afrobeats music has gained more popularity.
In this year alone, Burna Boy has been featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Trevor Noah's Daily Show, nominated for the Grammy award in 2020 and has done songs with popular international acts like Angelique Kidjo, Stormzy and Ed Sheeran.
Davido, on the other hand, has of recent featured popular American rapper, Cardi B in Fall remix. Cardi has herself been seen singing a couple of Nigerian songs like Timayas I Cant Kill Myself.
Not to speak of Beyonce featuring Wizkid, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy and the rest of that.
It keeps getting better and better.
However, these are the top five Nigerian songs from 2019 according to this writer's rating.
1. Blow My Mind - Davido ft. Chrisbrown
This has to be the biggest hit this year. In 2019, Davido and Chris Brown built a formidable relationship and their love rubbed off on this particular track. The pop song had David's beautiful chorusing blend in with the finesse of Chris voice.
A perfect piece for fans to feed on.
2. Jealous - Fireboy DML
Although Fireboy DML is not too much of a big brand in the industry having only launched out this year, this his debut track however is definitely one of the biggest in 2019.
Jealous was all over the air for a very long time. Even up till this moment, bodies will shake and mouths will scream the moment the DJ plays it at a nightclub or house party.
It created a very oomph start for Fireboy.
3. Dumebi - Rema
In March, Don Jazzy had announced the signing on of a teenage pop artiste by his record label, Mavin. By May, Rema's Dumebi was bursting every airwave and still does so up till this moment.
The Afrobeats song is a track off Rema's self-titled extended play record which contains four tracks - Corny, Iron Man, Why and Dumebi.
For an artiste who just started out, Dumebi is a commendable effort and there's so much in stock for the lad in his career. So much to look forward to.
4. Joro - Wizkid
With over 8 million downloads in the first week of release, Wizkid's "Joro" is definitely one of the greatest songs this year. There was so much anticipation for the song as he had released "Ghetto Love" as a build-up; a move that almost trashed his year.
In the end, it was all gain for the music star as his fans and music lovers all over the world accepted this piece as soon as it had landed.
5. Soapy - Naira Marley
Even with all the controversies associated with the name, Naira can be comfortably referred to as one of the best artistes in the country as every project he drops officially becomes a hit one.
Naira's "Soapy" is the evidence that no publicity is bad publicity. Publicity is publicity.
Although the concept of the songs conflicts with Nigerian traditional moral standards, the song did not die too early. Up till today, Naira is still very much celebrated for Soapy.
