A fatal auto crash involving a commercial bus with Rev No.463 XB and Mitsubishi L300 bus with Reg. No: XC 418 JJT has left about 12 passengers with varying degrees of injury.
The accident happened along Awka-Onitsha expressway by Enugwu-Agidi junction in Anambra State.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Mohammed said the identity of both drivers is yet known.
He said that Police patrol team attached to Abagana Division visited the scene and rushed casualties to Princeton Orthopedic Hospital Ngozika Estate and Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Awka for treatment.
According to him, one casualty believed to be the driver of the L 300 bus was confirmed dead by the medical Doctor and corpse deposited at Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, for preservation and autopsy.
Mohammed said case was under investigation to ascertain actual cause of the accident.
He said: “An accident that happened in the night of November 22, 2019 along Ezinifite/Uga road, Aguata involving a Honda Pilot Jeep with Registration number ABJ-618-AY driven by one Rev Emmanuel Akachukwu ‘m’ of NO 12B Adebuonia Street, Onitsha and a Mitsubishi Delica Bus with Reg number XG-179-AWK conveying 14 passengers, driven by one Pastor Isaac Ugeri ‘m’ of No. 19 Nwaziki Street Obosi in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State recorded one death.”
It was gathered that the two vehicles were coming from the opposite direction when they had a head-on collision. As a result, seven persons including the two drivers sustained injuries.
The statement said: “Police Patrol team attached to Aguata Division visited the scene and with the assistance of Red cross rushed casualties to Community hospital Nkpologwu where one Hillary Onu ‘m’ aged 40 years of Enugu Ezike in Enugu State was certified dead on admission while others are responding to treatment.
“Corpse deposited at the mortuary for postmortem examination and case is under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Similarly, one 54-year-old deaf and dumb man, George Nwanna from Agu-ukwu Nri in Anaocha Local Government Area, was weekend knocked down along Ogbatuluenyi road, Federal Housing Estate- 3-3, Onitsha.
The Lexus jeep 330 with Reg No: AKD 801 FAN was driven a man identified as IkechukwuAkabueze of No Umunya Street, Federal Housing Estate, 3-3, Onitsha.
The accident which happened in the night left the victim badly injured, but was rushed to Queen of the Rosary Hospital, Onitsha for medical attention Onitsha by Traffic Officers attached to 3-3 Division in the commercial city of Onitsha.
The PPRO said the victim was subsequently referred to Iyienu Hospital Ogidi for further treatment where he was later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
He said corpse was later deposited at same hospital mortuary for autopsy and case is under investigation.
Mohammed added: “The Commissioner of Police CP John B. Abang implores all road users in the state to refrain from reckless driving in order to avert accidents which could lead to loss of innocent lives especially at this critical period when the State is experiencing mass movements of people who are coming for Christmas and New Year celebrations.”
