Jay Jay Okocha
Augustine Azuka “Jay Jay” Okocha, the undisputable international soccer maestro, has said that in spite of the present economic situation and high level of insecurity in the country, he remains a Nigerian and cannot run away from the country.
The 46-year-old former professional footballer who played as attacking midfielder made this assertion in Lagos on Thursday during a chance encounter with the News Express.
Asked if the present insecurity in the country is what informed his stay abroad even when he has retired from active football, the ex-Super Eagles’ quick and skillful playmaker considered as the best Nigerian football dribblers and one of the best African players of all time said: “Yes, I do not settle completely in Nigeria. I am partly in Nigeria and partly abroad. But at the end of the day Nigeria is my country, I cannot run away no matter the situation.”
Giving his opinion specifically about the nation’s economy and insecurity, the Delta State-born super star whose parents resided in Iwo Local Government Area of Osun State expressed hope and faith in the country.
“In spite of those challenges, I still have faith in the country. Nigeria could be better,” he said.
Proffering solutions towards a speedy recovery of the country, the former Bolton Wanderers and Hull City midfielder (among other clubs) said: “To take the country to where we want it has to be with our collective effort. It’s not a one man show. But even with all the challenges, I still think we are better off than what the country was many years ago. At least today we are in a democracy.”
