Tambuwal, Maku, Abaribe to grace Advertising Forum in Lagos

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Aminu Tambuwal, Chairman of the Senate Committee on information, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, and the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, are among heavyweights expected at the 2012 Advertising Forum holding today at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel.

While Tambuwal will declare the event open, Abaribe will chair it and Maku will be the Special Guest.

The theme of the forum organised by the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) is “Outdoor Advertising Regulation and Control in Nigeria.”

A statement by Yusuf Abdullateef of APCON’s Corporate Affairs Department said that the forum “seeks to galvanise opinion from the various stakeholders in Nigeria’s outdoor advertising industry towards resolving regulatory and operational issues facing the industry.”

According to Yusuf, “Existing constitutional and statutory provisions on the regulation of outdoor Advertising have tended to breed conflicts between operators of outdoor advertising and various tiers and agencies of government. This forum seeks to develop a consensus resolution of the conflicts and propose a legislation that would unify the standard for the smooth operation of the industry across the country.”

He said that “heads of the various Advertising Sectoral Associations will present position papers which will be followed by broad-based discussions involving heads of States’ Outdoor Advertising Control Agencies, heads of government ministries and agencies which have interests in outdoor advertising as well as chairmen of local governments.”

Speaking on the planned forum, APCON Registrar/CEO, Alhaji Garba Bello Kankarofi, disclosed that advertising stakeholders from the various sectors of the industry, officials of various tiers and agencies of government in Nigeria, some state governors and members of the National Assembly and other parties involved in outdoor business in Nigeria are expected as participants at the event. He noted that the outcome of the forum will inform APCON’s new policy and regulation on the operation and practice of Out-of-Home advertising in the country.
