Corps members at a parade
The Minister for Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare, has disclosed that members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will enjoy the new minimum wage.
Daily Trust reports Dare disclosed this in a tweet on Wednesday evening.
“New Minimum Wage: NYSC members to enjoy new minimum wage/ allowee Next week the DG NYSC will provide details of the new allowee for the Youth Corp members after full briefing from the Ministries of Finance And MYSD,” he posted on Twitter.
Recall that The Guardian, on May 17, 2019, had reported that the Nigerian Minister for Finance Zainab Ahmed, said the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members allowance would be increased.
“There would be an increase for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as well,” Ahmed said.
At the time, she said the government was still working out modalities before the implementation of the new allowance for the corps members.
“Because by the Act they should earn at least the minimum wage and the NYSC also has to increase to that N30, 000,” Ahmed said.
“So, because we have not done the negotiation with Labour, I cannot give you the details of what we are projecting because it is simply on projections, at the end of the day, it is what we agree with Labour that will be the amount that is due,” she said.
Corps members are currently earning a monthly allowance of N19,800. N18,000 minimum wage plus 1,800 as transport allowance.
