A fully loaded luxury bus heading for Lagos from Enugu Thursday morning caught fire on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway axis of the University town of Igbariam in Anambra East local council area.

Eye witness accounts said the bus belonging to a popular transport company was fully loaded with commuters when the fire broke out.

According to some of the passengers in the bus, the fire started from an overheated tyre.

They said that the driver stopped to check which of the tyres, only for the vehicle to get engulfed by fire as a result of combustion from the heated tyre.

Efforts made to put out the fire by members of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other good-spirited individuals failed as the whole bus came under a cloud of smoke and in no time was razed.

No life was lost, it was learnt as all the passengers escaped with their luggage.

The incident caused a temporary commotion along the express, with private and commercial vehicles scampering to safety. (Daily Independent)
