Revealed: How Army, Civilian JTF recaptured Chibok from Boko Haram

Details have about about how Nigeria on Saturday night (around 7pm) retook the popular north-eastern town of Chibok from Boko Haram after barely 48 hours of the town’s occupation by terrorists, who had sparked global outrage by abducting hundreds of schoolgirls from the community last April. (Over 200 of the girls remain in Boko Haram’s custody.)

News Express had reported Chibok’s rescue yesterday afternoon, quoting a statement by Defence Headquarters, but details of the operation were not immediately available. The Nigerian military had been thoroughly embarrassed when news of Chibok’s fall on Thursday afternoon broke, and had to act quickly to end the embarrassment.

Revealing how the town, located in the troubled Borno State, was reclaimed, Pogu Bitrus, a community in Chibok, told AFP that it was the outcome of a joint operation by soldiers and local vigilantes known as the Civilian Joint Task Force. He said the civilians fought inside Chibok while the soldiers “stayed outside the town to mop up the insurgents trying to escape.” Details of casualties are unavailable but the town is said to be deserted.
