Man of the moment Burna Boy
At the moment, Burna Boy’s fame and fanbase are spreading like wild fire all over the globe. He’s topping every chart, winning every award and selling out every arena. We can comfortably call these times the best yet for the popular Afro beat singer.
He has appeared on top international live shows including Jimmy Kimmel Live and Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show.
Say a few three years before now, his was a struggling brand trying to find feet in the already overcrowded industry. But as it stands, it would be very difficult for anyone to mention five trending musical artistes in the country without having Burna’s name coming tops on the list. The peak is where he is at (or so we think).
However, this is not the first time an artiste would spring forth out of the blues and become a household name in a matter of months and just fade out in the same rush in which he or she came in. Slimcase is an example.
Slimcase bought the heart of the streets with his ‘codeine’ sound. It was the talk of the town. Hearing his tagline “Saint Sammy Ganja” would mean an ultimate turn up. But the Shaku Shaku dance wore off and so did Slimcase’s name. It gave way for Zlatan’s Zanku.
Insinuations are going around that Burna Boy’s thriving is as a result of Wizkid and Davido’s absence from the local music scene this year. Both artistes have taken the international route lately, thereby giving allowance for “locals” (like Burna Boy) to shine a little while in their absence.
How true is this?
Will the Burna Empire last long enough?
Will he also fade out like the rest of them?
For how long will he wear the title of the African Giant?
These questions lurk in my heart even as I jam to his ‘Anybody’ each morning before tea.
