Former councillors and political appointees in the Cross River State local government system took to the streets of Calabar, the state capital, on Thursday.
They protested the non-payment of their severance allowances. Those who made the protest and marched to the governor’s office and to the state House of Assembly complex, served in the state between December 2010 and December 2013.
The protesters said they were drawing attention to the hard times they and their family members were passing through over non-payment of their severance allowance.
In their protest letter signed by Hon. Kessy Nzan Agbor and Hon. Effiong Etim, Chairman and Secretary, respectively of forum of former councillors and addressed to the state governor, Senator Liyel Imoke and the Speaker of the legislature, Hon. Larry Odey, they lamented the hardship being experienced by the former councillors and appointees across the state.
