Scene of the accident
A 20-feet container on Thursday slipped off from a 4ft trailer in motion, leaving two persons dead on the spot while four sustained varying degrees of injury.
It was learnt that the container, which fell at the Obodoukwu road junction, Upper Iweka area in the commercial city of Onitsha, fell on two tricycles.
When our correspondent visited the scene, some of the victims were still trapped as the container seemed too heavy for two large towing lorries brought to lift it from the trapped tricycles.
The injured persons in critical conditions were rushed to various hospitals for medical attention.
The towing process led to heavy traffic jam on both sides of the Onitsha-Owerri road.
The surviving victims were later rescued through the assistance of policemen from the Okpoko Divisional Police Station, officials of the FRSC and Anambra State Traffic Management Agency (ASTMA) in conjunction with the ambulance workers of the Toronto hospital.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Haruna Mohammed, while confirming the death toll and the number of the injured from the accident said the area has since been cordoned off while the road had been cleared for free flow of vehicular movement.
