SPECIAL FEATURE: My fears for Clarence Peters, By Itty Okim

Movie genius Clarence Peters

In 2008, Clarence shot the video of ‘Street Credibility’ – a song by 9ice and 2Face – which shot him into limelight and earned him referrals for tons of other A-list artistes as at that time.

The video only made popular the fact that Clarence knows his onions, but his talent didn’t begin from there. Clarence Abiodun Peters was born creative.

Having a singer for father (Sir Shina Peters) and a resplendent actress for mother (Clarion Chukwura), one can comfortably insinuate that Biodun has art flowing in his vessels in place of blood. Perhaps, his gene contributes to his colourful storytelling maestro.

Clarence had a very regular childhood in South Africa. His mother once mentioned in an interview that she almost aborted him while she was heavy with him as a baby (She and Shina were not married).

She however changed her mind when the sentiments of him (Clarence) being an incarnate of her father whom she had just lost set in. He was born to be great!

Truly, Clarence who is the CEO of CAPital Dream Pictures and CAPital Hill Records has lived up to that greatness he was born for.

Between 1998 and now, CAP has shot tens upon tens of music videos; most of which ended up becoming hit songs and had award-winning videos.

His tagline, “Clarence Shot It”, has become something every Nigerian music lover anticipates to see while watching a good music video. Why?

Biodun is a beautiful storyteller! He is known for telling stories with all his works and this talent has carved out that niche for himself which has over the years set him above all others in the video directing industry.

Clarence Peters has been ruling as god of music filming for so many years but for how much longer will he wear the crown and bear the title? I fear that his throne is being threatened by a new name in Nigerian music cinematography, ThankGod Omori.

Fondly known as the “Boy Director”, TG Omori is fast finding his feet in the music space and is only getting better with every passing minute.

Having started his filming career at the age of fifteen, TG was recorded as the youngest filmmaker of his time. His first professional music video was ‘Respect A Woman’ by ES Plus in 2015. Ever since, the setting of his success story has been from grass to grace.

Some months back, ThankGod shot the highly controversial song by Afeez Fashola (popular, Naira Marley) ‘Am I A Yahoo Boy’, a project that shot him into larger lights almost immediately.

He has since then worked with the likes of Rude Boy, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Olamide, Tiwa Savage, D'banj, Zlatan, Timaya and Fireboy DML to mention only a few.

Adasa Cookey who shoots for Squareball is a popular music cinematographer.

Moe Musa is another one.

Frizzle & Bizzle is another one.

AJE is on the list as well.

However, none of them can be considered as competition against Clarence of CAPital dream. And the reason TG is considered as one is because they both have the same style of directing.

So much so that in December 2018, Trace Live Naija described TG Omori as the future of music video directing in Nigeria considering how much the 24-year-old Cross Riverian has achieved in a short while.

I am no soothsayer to tell you what the future holds; but one thing I'm sure of is that Clarence Peters needs to wake up from complacence if he wants to retain his relevance.

As it is now, the sky is only the point of departure for the youngster, TG Omori.

And there lie my real fears for the video shoot whizkid, CAP.
