Boko Haram insurgents have returned to troubled northern part of Borno State where they previously camped, unleashing terror on several communities and killing many people.
The northern part of Borno was one of the major Boko Haram strongholds until late 2013, when the insurgents were dislodged, forcing them to relocate to some other states.
Sources said the insurgents attacked Kukawa, a town, where the NNPC currently prospects for oil and the headquarters of Kukawa Local Government.
“They set ablaze the Kukawa Police Station, Government Lodge and other public buildings in the town,” a source said.
According to the source, the insurgents rode into the town in many Hilux vehicles and motorcycles at about 4am on Monday. “They headed straight to the police station as soon as they arrived, shooting sporadically,” he said, adding that many residents fled the town when they sighted the insurgents.
Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Kukawa Local Government, Alhaji Modu Musa, confirmed the attack, adding that the insurgents killed many people and burnt many vehicles.
