The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment towards improving the country’s electoral process.
Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, renewed the commitment on Monday morning while delivering the opening address at the 2019 General Elections Review Meeting with the Media held at Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.
He said it is for this reason that INEC is going round the country consulting stakeholders with a view to getting their feedback on the 2019 elections and candid suggestions on areas that need improvement.
“We are ready to implement the suggestions right from the next election we are conducting –the Pengana (Plateau) State Constituency election,” he said.
Prof. Yakubu, however, pointed out that the reform cannot be executed by INEC alone.
“INEC is committed to implementing all the recommendations by observers but all cannot be implemented through administrative act INEC; some require collaborative action by other organs of government.
“For example, the EU Observer Mission made 30 recommendations but only nine of them can be implemented by the commission,” he said. Some of the recommendations, he said, require legislation by way of law reform.
The day-long event was attended by almost all INEC national commissioners and a wide spectrum of media houses, including News Express.
