The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has begun the investigation into the alleged unlawful detention and torture by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS), Magbon Command, Ogun State.

The investigation is sequel to the Petition Letter written by the human rights group, the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ), against some officials of the F-SARS.

In the signed Petition Letter dated March 25, 2019 by its Executive Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, CHRSJ alleged that officers of the F-SARS, Wole (Baba Magbon), Elewure Kazeem, an officer simply identified as Eunice and Inspector Wasiu Askari of illegal torture and unlawful detention of one Mr. Afolabi Sunday.

The CHRSJ requested for an honest, unbiased, transparent and thorough investigation into the allegations contained therein in its petition to the Commission.

According to the NHRC’s Letter to CHRSJ in respect of the earlier Letter of the human rights body, which copies were made available to newsmen on Wednesday, the Commission assured of diligent investigation into the all allegations leveled against officials of Magbon F-SARS and later report to the appropriate authorities.

The Commission’s letter dated May 7, 2019 and signed by its officer in charge of Civil and Political rights, Faith Ikeoshi for Executive Secretary of the NHRC, urged citizens not take the law into their hands but to cultivate the habit of reporting any grievance to appropriate regulatory authorities for proper interventions.

The NHRC’s Letter read thus: “The Commission is in receipt of your complaint dated March 25, 2019 on the above subject matter. The complaint has been registered as C/2019/ CPR/2255-2258/HQ and it is receiving attention, progress in our treatment of the complaint will be communicated to you in due course.”
