Senator Dino Melaye
The spate of barbaric killings across the country by men of the Nigeria Police Force was, again, the focus of the upper chamber of the National Assembly on Tuesday.
During the plenary session, the lawmaker representing Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye, cited Order 42 and drew the attention of the Senate to the incessant killing of innocent Nigerians by the Nigerian Police, saying.
“We are not in a war situation; we are in a democracy. I am demanding that we fast track the police reform bill so that the indiscriminate killing of Nigerians can stop,” Melaye said.
Reacting to the matter, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, stated: “As Senator Melaye said, we have the Police Reform Report coming in tomorrow, to be considered, and hopefully, we should be able to go through it and pass the Bill tomorrow, which will address some of the issues he has raised which are of great concern.”
Saraki also lamented the wave of extrajudicial killings in the country, saying: “The rampant killings that were seen by some units of the police, we think that once we have a reform that addresses the responsibilities and the level of accountability of police officers, we should see a better service of the police towards our people.”
The Senate President moved the order cited to tomorrow – Wednesday, April 17, 2019.
