Armed robbers have killed two travellers, injuring several and causing multiple vehicular accident along Abuja/Kaduna road.
One of the accident victims who spoke to journalists in Kaduna said the accident occurred near Doka Hospital along Abuja/Kaduna road around 4pm on Friday.
“They blocked the road near Doka hospital and made unsuspecting vehicles to ram into each other. About six vehicles were involved in the accident, which included a black official vehicle of I-Care Women and Children Initiative, an NGO of the wife of Vice President Namadi Sambo. The vehicle was completely burnt and could not be salvaged by sympathisers who stopped to help put off the fire,” the victim said.
Another victim, Abdulrahman Mikailu, a social worker, who spoke to our reporter today from his bed at St. Gerald Hospital in Kaduna, said the said official vehicle was among the five vehicles that ran into each other.
Mikailu managed to tell our reporter: “Two bullets shot by the bandits missed me narrowly when I tried to come out of my vehicle to put off the fire, not knowing that a robbery operation was going on. I had to duck and fall on the ground, pretending to be dead.
“The robbers who were in military uniform thought I was dead, so they proceeded to my car and ordered my co-traveler to surrender all his money and laptops, handsets and other personal belonging of both of us.
“The fire had already raged as at the time of the attack; that was why the sympathisers could not put it off. I understand that they killed two passengers in a ‘Sharon’ commercial vehicle and robbed several vehicles.
“I am lucky to have survived with bruises and chest injury from the impact of the accident, but I lost my phones and other belongings.”
Reacting to the incident, Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Aminu Lawal, said the multiple accident was caused by panicked drivers who tried to reverse in the middle of the road.
He said so far there was no official report of casualties in the incident. “But the police also helped in putting off the fire and conveying some of the injured to the hospital,” he added.
