Against all odds, Nigeria has confirmed her readiness to roll out 5G network by 2020.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Unarmed Danbatta, stated this in Abuja, on Thursday at the Workshop on the future of industry: Driving Innovation and Growth, organised in partnership with the Global System for mobile Telecommunications Association (GSMA).
Danbatta said while the country works to perfect 3G and 4G, “we shouldn’t be left behind, as other countries are already in tune with 5G. We must also make efforts to get ourselves ready for the next generation network. ”
The NCC EVC noted that the factors that affect growth and innovation in the Telecom industry are government policies, regulation and performance of the networks.
According to him, to promote innovation and growth in this industry, as a requirement, “therefore, we must develop strategic policies, provide essential infrastructure, enhance competitive market, robust regulatory frameworks, focused compliance monitoring and enforcement mechanism, reform our spectrum access mechanisms, among others.”
In his opening remarks, the Head of sub-Saharan Africa, GSMA, Akinwale Good luck, there is nothing stopping Nigeria from meeting up with 5G standards.
All that is needed, according to Good luck is to improve her infrastructure and enthrone good policies.
