The scenario at the Anambra State House of Assembly on Thursday depicted that of a war zone as policemen cordoning the complex from visitors and staff members of the Assembly sprayed tear gas into the atmosphere to scare off suspected political thugs that invaded the complex.
The House resumed sitting following an adjournment by the Speaker of the House, Hon. Rita Maduagwu after she was impeached on Tuesday by some lawmakers, led by Hon Ikem Uzoezie representing Aguata 11 constituency.
The policemen numbering about three hundred had, as early as 8am, cordoned the Assembly vicinity from the Alex Ekwueme Square entrance.
It was gathered that trouble started when a lawmaker brought some supporters to allegedly show solidarity for Maduagwu, but security officials repelled the protesters with tear gas.
In an effort to prevent the alleged supporters from having access to the Assembly complex, tear gas was sprayed leaving the entire environment saturated with tear gas as both lawmakers present, members of staff and journalists scampered for safety.
