The nationwide strike by the organised labour in Anambra State recorded partial compliance as public schools which opened earlier in the morning were shut down at past mid-day as the labour force went to government-owned schools to chase both teachers and students out of school.

Similarly, the three Federal Government colleges located at Awka, Nise and Onitsha were closed, while students were asked to remain in the dormitory until Monday when schools will be open for regular studies.

Though government-owned hospitals and banks were open for business, the state secretariat was a ghost of itself.

Despite the closure of the state secretariat, many workers were seen around the premises even as the senior government officials remained at their duty post without their support staff.

When News Express visited one of the first generation banks, the workers were seen busy with their work, but customers were only allowed to go into the banking hall through the back door.

A member of staff in the bank who pleaded anonymity said that the reason for the closure of the door to the banking hall was to avoid any attack by hoodlums who might seize the opportunity of the strike to cause trouble.

At the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, all the workers, including doctors, nurses and other health professionals were busy attending to the huge number of patients seen in various departments of the hospitals.

A medical doctor who did not give her name said the hospital was functioning fully with medical students taking their lectures as well.

The high court complex was however shut and some lawyers who had adjourned cases could not get on with their cases.

Fuel stations functioned optimally in their daily routine of selling fuel.

Meanwhile, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Chief Jerry Nnubia and other labour officials went round the state to ensure total compliance in the various government offices.

In a statement, the Labour leader in the state expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance.

He noted that the only challenge they had was the secondary schools which remained open.

His words: “I am satisfied with the level of compliance in Anambra State. The state secretariat and the local government offices were closed.

“The only area we had a challenge is the secondary school. However, I called the state chairman of the NUT, who told me that he was on his way back from delegates conference outside the state and that he will ensure that teachers join the strike on Friday.”
