The Nigeria Intervention Movement, (NIM) has said that it will convene a national dialogue on the future of Nigeria.

NIM in a statement by the Head of its Media Bureau, Adebowale Adeniyi, said that the group will also nominate a consensus presidential candidate ahead of the 2019 election.

The statement indicated that the forthcoming National Political Dialogue, which holds between August 28 and 30, would feature fresh breed political leaders and more than 1,000 eminent political leaders who have been carefully chosen.

It said that one of the duties of the group would be to “rub minds and make exchanges on the best criteria for adopting a common credible presidential candidate for the third force movement ahead of the 2019 general elections holding next year in Nigeria.”

The statement added that 35 presidential aspirants have already been nominated and shortlisted to showcase their credentials out of whom the consensus candidate would be picked.

According to Adeniyi the list of presidential hopefuls shortlisted is a mix of seemingly credible old and young breed aspirants jostling for the third force movement endorsement for the 2019 elections.

“Whoever is endorsed by the LOC of NIM at the all presidential aspirants Summit this month, after interacting with eminent leaders of thought and leading stakeholders in the country, shall be presented to the Nigerian public in September for national endorsement ahead of the 2019 elections,” the statement said.

It also indicated that the NIM Movement led by the duo of Dr Abduljalil Tafawa Balewa and Dr Olisa Agbakoba, SAN is worried by the spate of “orchestrated impeachments among the political class and office holders in the country.”

It said that the development was fast turning the country into a police state and likely to truncate the country’s democracy if allowed to continue.

“NIM said a growing political culture, where minority in Nigeria’s legislative chambers have been aided by security forces to initiate impeachment process or where impeachments have not followed due constitutional processes are risky to the survival of present hard-earned democracy and should be resisted and should not be allowed to continue by the Nigerian civil society,” NIM said in the statement.
