Part of the destroyed school roof
The people of Ihiala in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State have sent an SOS to the state government over the devastation caused by windstorm that blew off the roof of St. Jude secondary school located within the community.
The raging storm which was caused by wind which came as a result of a heavy downpour, blew off the roof of some classrooms leaving students in misery.
Speaking at Ihiala, the President of the Old Students Association of the school, Mr. Marcel Awugosi, regretted that the incident has worsened the accommodation challenges facing the school as majority of the classes are now overcrowded.
He observed that classrooms which were not affected by the wind were equally in dire need of immediate renovation to save them from collapsing.
Awugosi noted that the school over the years have produced quality professionals who are contributing immensely in driving various sectors of the nation’s economy, while members of the Old Students Association have equally made some interventions to support the school.
When contacted, the Principal of the school, Lady Augustina Ukeje, said the affected block was accommodating JS 2 students who have now been moved to SS 3 Class because of the ongoing examination in the school hall.
She lamented that if nothing is done urgently before the next session begins, the students would be left without a roof over their head.
The principal also said that the building housing the Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Food Nutrition Laboratory which was sometimes gutted by fire still need re-roofing and renovation.
She called on the Town Union Executive, the Local Government Council, members of the Old Students Association, Philanthropists and other stakeholders in the area to come to the aid of the school to complement efforts of the state government in developing the state's education sector.
