Victor Umeh
The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial district, Chief Victor Umeh, on Friday, hailed the Nigerian judiciary for standing for the truth, despite all odds throughout his over 15 years’ battle to defend his party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) while serving as the national chairman.
Umeh on the heels of his judicial victory, dedicated the award of Man of the Year bestowed on him by the Anambra State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to the nation’s judiciary.
In his speech at the NUJ summit held at the Godwin Ezeemo Secretariat in Awka, Umeh labelled himself the product of the judiciary.
He regretted the roles of some politicians, journalists and lawyers in trying to stand against the truth on political matters, adding that online media should not be used as a platform for attacks or vendetta.
Umeh called on young people to strive for education before venturing into online media practice.
His words: “The online media should not be a place to attack people and carry out vendettas. Young people should first pursue education before venturing into online media practice. You don’t float online platform to attack people without justification.”
The senator urged journalists, especially those operating online media to always pursue fairness, truth and objectivity.
He, however, noted that the National Assembly had embarked on sound legislation that would give the country a robust and enduring democracy adding that 2018 budget, when signed by the president, had the capacity to better the lives of Nigerians.
Umeh while reacting to the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra, regretted that the court was used to carry out such action, saying “it would be counterproductive.”
He urged tiers of government to pursue dialogue in conflict resolution.
Umeh was sworn in January this year after a three years legal battle resulting from the 2015 general elections.
