Normalcy is gradually returning to Amassoma, hosts of the Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa, after days of unrest which reportedly led to loss of five lives.

Our Correspondent who visited the university town, Thursday reports that the roads and streets were deserted amidst heavy deployment of Police and Civil Defense personnel.

Economic activities were beginning to pick up in the once busy town.

The main campus of the university was open while a detachment of heavily armed security operatives made up of police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operatives..

Over 15 police vans were sighted including an Armoured Personnel Carrier were stationed at the school gate, while other vans were patrolling the town.

Economic and social activities were at low ebb as few shops in the area opened as most shops and business centres remained shut.

Broken bottles, charred remains of burnt tires and wood littered the roads.

At the Amassoma Divisional Police station and barracks where the protesters had invaded, there was massive destruction of the buildings and furniture including ceiling fans and computers and other electronics.

It was also learnt that two detainees were freed by the mob.

Reacting to the development, Bayelsa Commissioner of Police Don Awunah, said his men deployed reasonable force in dispersing the armed protesters who fatally injured two policemen.

He said that no one has reported any deaths to the Police Division adding that police was not aware of deaths arising from the police action in the area.

He said the police were the victim, as assets and facilities of the police and its men were vandalised and looted.

He maintained that the mission of the police is to maintain law and order in Amasoma and wondered why Police was the target of the attack.
