Group launches 'citizens guide to the recall process'

EIE Executive Director, Yemi Adamolekun

EIE, a network of individuals and organizations committed to instituting a culture of good governance onThursdaylaunched a booklet, ‘The Citizens Guide to the Recall Process.’

Explaining the reason behind the launch, EIE Executive Director, Yemi Adamolekun said that lawmakers are consistently accused of irresponsible behaviour and a poor representation of their constituents, yet they complete their tenure. She noted that rather than using their constitutional power to recall non-performing legislators, “we are seeing citizens violently react to their representatives.”

She noted that angry youths recently attacked Mr. Joshua Lidani, Senator, Gombe South on April 2nd, 2018, and angry constituents stoned Mr. Garba Hamman Julde, Bali/Gassol federal constituency, Taraba on Saturday, March 31st.

“To complement our work with other partners on a transparent and accountable National Assembly (#OpenNASS), it became imperative to educate citizens on their constitutional right to ‘recall’ a legislator who represents them poorly.

“In 2013, we started the process to publish a guide to educate citizens on this constitutional provision and it has been quite a journey. Against the backdrop of Dino Melaye's recall process, the guide is finally ready,” she declared.

The 16-page booklet contains everything the citizen need to know in engaging and recalling their legislators.

The guide, according to EIE, is a publication of its initiative 'Shine Your Eye' (SYE), an online and mobile platform “that lets you learn about your elected officials, follow their activities, and engage them.

“Our goal is to increase accountability in governance by making it easier for Nigerians to engage elected office holders, curating activities also makes it easier to review track records at election time,” Adamolekun said.
