It’s all lies; nobody was raped at Flavour’s concert: Police

Popstar Chinedu Okoli alias Flavour

The Police in Enugu State, Wednesday, described as untrue reported rape of about 20 ladies at a musical concert, which featured popstar, Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour.

The concert was held past weekend at the Michael Okpara Square.

The media were awash with reports that over 20 ladies were allegedly raped, while others left the show, near naked as their dresses were torn by the alleged criminals.

Investigation by our correspondent at the Enugu Police Command headquarters showed that no such case was reported, four days after the event.

Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, told newsmen that neither the state command headquarters nor any of its division had received report from any victim over the alleged rape.

Amaraizu wondered how the news was generated. He said mischief could not be ruled out as those behind the fake news had evil intention to scare concert goers, law abiding members of the public and disparage security operatives, the State Government and the organisers.

“There is no reported case anywhere in the Enugu State Police Command,” he said, adding: “We don’t have any incident arising from that event; whoever has any information to any rape should come forward, and we will investigate.

“That event was organised by Flavour as a way of giving back to the society, because he grew up here in Enugu.

“We won’t want a situation where people sit down somewhere and manufacture stories. He who asserts must also prove.

“You begin to ask: those people that quoted number of the rape victims as 20, how did they know the number? Does it mean they were following the rapists around to take the data? Or the victims were assembled at one place and raped? Who are these victims?

“People cannot just sit down and say 1,000 persons have been raped whereas there is no evidence to substantiate that. People are abusing the social media because I understand that someone just tweeted it and it began to spread.”

While noting that “the handiwork of mischief makers cannot be ruled out”, the PPRO stressed that “these are people who are always there to cause panic in the minds of law-abiding residents of the state, to cause terror in their minds and to rubbish the good work being done by the security agents and the State Government.

“So, as far the command is concerned, we do not have any reported case of rape arising from that event or after the event. Any person who has any claim on the contrary should come up with it and we will take it up from there.

“It is quite lamentable and disgusting for people to wallow in such imagination and feed the public with it.”
