The Senate has resolved to write the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, over what it described as interference in the workings of the National Assembly by some court pronouncements which are not in consonance with constitutional democracy.

This followed a point of order by Senate Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Thursday.

Akpabio raised the issue based on media reports that a court had asked the National Assembly to stop an alleged plan by the parliament to veto the recent rejection of the 2010 Electoral Act amendment by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Senate Majority Leader Ahmad Lawan concurred, saying that the court judgment was meant to stop the National Assembly from performing its constitutional duties, which is against democratic practices.

Senate President Bukola Saraki asked what step the Senate should take and it was unanimously agreed that a letter be written to the CJN to complain against the judge that made such a pronouncement.
