Kaduna LG chair docked for certificate forgery

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed D. Abubakar, has docked the serving chairman of Soba Local Government of Kaduna State, Hon. Kawu Yakasai, for certificate forgery. Yakasai was arraigned today at a Magistrate Court in Kaduna, South-West Nigeria.

The FIR from the IGP was not read following the objection raised by the defence counsel that the case had been struck out in previous hearings brought to the Daura Road Magistrate’s Court.

Yakasai is accused of forging WAEC results purportedly issued by Barewa College, Zaria, in his name.

Counsel to the accused, OI Habib, objected to the proceedings, arguing that it would be an abuse of court process to entertain the case.

He asked the court to adjourn the case to enable the defence to prepare.

The Magistrate, Auwalu Aliyu, did not take the plea of the accused and adjourned the case to April 7, for mention.

Yakasai had in Nov. 2012 appeared before the Daura Road Magistrate’s Court for forgery.

The case, instituted by Mustapha Musa and Ubale Telan-Matasa was adjourned three times before the Kaduna State Government took over and terminated the case.

The then state Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, Mr. Gamali Yakore, had told the court that the government was interested in settling the matter out of court.

He said the action was in line with Section 211 sub-section 1 and 2 of the 1999 Constitution.

The case was adjourned to 7-April-2014 by the Magistrate Court 1 for formal application of the preliminary objection raised by the defence council.
