Hundreds of suspected Boko Haram fighters miscalculated when they invaded Maiduguri, capital of Borno State in Nigeria’s troubled North-East earlier today.
They were worsted by gallant Nigerian troops, who gunned down many of the terrorists while others took to their heels and are being hunted by soldiers.
Bodies of dead terrorists have been piled up at the Giwa Barracks and people have been trooping in to see for themselves.
A Maiduguri resident, Bulama Kadai, sent News Express a photo of the bodies with the caption: “Boko Haram Dead Bodies at Giwa Barracks Maiduguri. Right now am in the barracks.” News Express, however, has a policy of not publishing dead bodies and nude people.
Kadai’s account was later confirmed by Defence spokesman, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, who said the attackers had suffered “heavy casualties” in their failed attempt to free detainees at the Giwa Barracks. Olukolade said only four soldiers were wounded.
Boko Haram had in the recent past recorded stunning victories in its campaign of violence but has been largely checked in the past one week by the Nigerian military.
