The Nigerian Senate has invited the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to appear before its committees on Police Affairs and National Intelligence, over the failure of the police to implement its resolution.

The Senate had, last two weeks, directed the IGP to, within 14 days, fish out, arrest and prosecute perpetrators of Benue killings.

The ultimatum however expired on Tuesday, and no arrest is known to have been made.

President of the Senate Bukola Saraki, while making the pronouncement, during plenary on Wednesday, said the Police boss must appear before the joint committee, on Thursday, saying that the issue around killings and insecurity across the country would not be swept under the carpet.

The IGP on this summon is to explain why he refused to implement a resolution that compelled him to arrest perpetrators of the massacre in Benue State.

In a related development, the Senate also mandated its committee on Police affairs to invite the Inspector General of Police in a bid to find out what is being done about the political tension in Kano state and to ascertain why a sitting Senator is unable to visit his constituency.

Senator Isah Misau who represents Bauchi Central had, in a point of order, drew the attention of the Senate to the tension in Kano state, calling on the Senate to condemn the political tension mounting in the state.

However, the Senators from Kano State cautioned against allowing politics of state to be brought into the chambers of the Senate.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has written the National Assembly to disclose the steps being taken to resolve herdsmen/farmers clashes across the country, particularly, the recent killings in Benue State.

In the letter, read by President of the Senate Bukola Saraki on the floor of the Senate, President Buhari said plans were already underway to restructure the country’s security architecture to conform with the existing global realities.
